The Animal Welfare Board has instructed the Hosur Corporation to halt sterilisation surgeries in the light of The Hindu’s report on the botched surgery on a female dog.

The female dog that was released on August 13 by the Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre after sterilisation was identified with an eviscerated abdomen the following morning. The dog was spotted by a caregiver and taken to the Government polyclinic, where it was sutured up.

According to the sources, there should have been three levels of sutures, but the dog had only one at the muscle, causing the small intestine to start to fall out. The dog had begun to bite at its own intestines before it was rescued by the caregiver, Ajay. However, the ABC centre’s doctor in charge, Kalaimani. This person was reportedly alerted to the incident tried to hush up the matter by asking for the photos shared by Ajay to be deleted. The Animal Welfare Board was informed of the dog by an activist and The Hindu a day later.

The polyclinic under the control of the Animal Husbandry department failed to alert the Corporation of the incident despite knowing that the dog was sterilised by the ABC centre.

On Monday, Prabhavathy, member of AWB, stated that the ABC centre has been instructed to immediately halt surgeries.

According to the AWB inquiry, Dr. Kalaimani had not performed the surgery, but was in charge of the centre. There were multiple allegations against him since the start of the ABC programme under the newly inducted NGO International Trust of Peace that started sterilisation programme since June.

“I have instructed the Sanitation Officer of the ABC Centre to immediately stop the surgeries. There are dogs that are sterilised and unsterilised. The sterilised dogs will have to be released after recovery. We will have to find good doctors for the sterilisation of the other dogs,” Ms. Prabhavathy said.

Corporation Health Officer Ajitha. This person is in charge of the sterilisation programme, was not reachable. According to the Sanitation Officer of the ABC Centre, Prabhakaran, the Corporation will send a letter to the Joint Director, Animal Husbandry.

On Monday, the NGO International Trust of Peace issued a letter to the Corporation terminating the services of Dr. As advised by the Hosur Corporation.
