Smith did not take the field for the Jets' preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week as he dealt with ankle soreness. Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe and Cade Klubnik split quarterback reps in that 24-16 loss.
Cook completed nine of his 15 pass attempts for 108 yards. Zappe went 6/10 with two interceptions, and Klubnik finished with 56 yards on 5/7 passing.
In practice, the Jets acquired Smith in a trade with the Raiders this past March, reuniting him with the team where he spent the first four seasons of his NFL career. He's reportedly struggled through training camp so far this year.
"I just think there's soreness, " Jets head coach Aaron Glenn remarked of Smith's injury on Wednesday. "I think any player at this point knows that something is going to hurt at some point. He's a competitor and he wants to create sure he gets those reps in. The thing is that we want to be smart too regarding how we go concerning doing things when it comes to him and any of our players." Friday's Jets-Steelers game will kickoff at 7 p.m. ET.
