A chemical used in some artificial and fake nail products has come under scrutiny over potential fertility and reproductive health risks, prompting the UK to introduce new restrictions.

The regulation, effective August 15, 2026, prohibits manufacturers and importers from placing new cosmetic products containing trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) on the market across England, Scotland and Wales.

TPO is used as a photoinitiator to assist gel nail polish cure under UV light. It has been classified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant following animal studies that linked high exposure to fertility and reproductive difficulties.

However, the new rules do not mean that artificial nails or gel manicures have been banned. The restrictions specifically target TPO, and many nail salons have already switched to products that do not contain the chemical.

The ban is being introduced gradually. Salons can continue using existing TPO-containing stock until February 14, 2027. After that date, the sale or distribution of products containing the chemical will also be prohibited.
