Tiruchi Corporation has launched a special drive to plant saplings along road medians throughout the city as part of efforts to increase urban greenery and improve the environment.
The initiative seeks at making better use of median spaces on major roads by creating green corridors. The Corporation has planted flowering and ornamental plant species that can withstand the city’s hot, dry climate along a portion of East Boulevard Road and Marakadai.
Work is under way along West Boulevard Road. The median has been cleaned, with old and dried plants removed and the space prepared for fresh saplings. Damaged grills around the median have been removed and will be replaced with new ones.
Corporation officials stated the initiative would improve the appearance of the city. Sanitation workers have been assigned to regularly water and maintain the plants to ensure their survival. Water facilities have been provided at the planting locations. “We are identifying stretches that need beautification. The plantation drive will be extended to more roads over the next few days,” a senior official said.
The Corporation had earlier planted flowering plants along medians on Bharathidasan Road, Anna Nagar Link Road, Puthur High Road, and Airport Road. However, the earlier initiatives failed to achieve the desired results due to inadequate and irregular maintenance.
At some medians, advertisement boards were installed to generate revenue for the Corporation. Civic activists, however, have observed that such boards can obstruct the growth of plants and detract from the appearance of the green spaces.
