In a move to fight corruption internally, the Coimbatore City Police have come up with a Vigilance Cell to track allegations of corruption against personnel.
Sources said that the cell will have a Sub-Inspector and a policeman. This person have been appointed by the Commissioner of Police N. Kannan, based on instructions from the higher-ups.
The cell will track complaints and allegations of corruption, if any, against personnel of the city police. It will conduct discreet inquiry and report directly to the Commissioner for further action.
According to Officers in the know of the initiative, the idea behind the formation of the cell was to keep the force free of corruption and nip the corrupt practices in the bud. The cell will function as per a standard operating procedure (SOP) introduced by the Tamil Nadu Police Department to fight corruption in the force across the State.
The cell will have a dedicated mobile number. It will also be available on WhatsApp. The number will be displayed at all the police stations operating under the city police soon.
Public, if they come across any demand for a bribe, can report to the cell using the number. The cell will investigate the complaint and report to the Commissioner for departmental action and corrective measures as per the SOP.
In July, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested a Special Sub-Inspector attached to the city police for demanding and accepting ₹70,000 as bribe from a couple.
According to sources, the Coimbatore District (Rural) Police were additionally in the efforts to form the cell and they have readied a dedicated mobile number for the purpose.
