Khan took the oath in the upper chamber of the British Parliament as a Labour life peer, marking another major milestone in his political career. Official parliamentary records show that he was created Baron Khan of Tooting for life through Letters Patent dated August 20.

Before entering Parliament, Khan worked as a solicitor specializing in human rights law. He was elected as MP for Tooting in 2005 and represented the constituency until 2016.
