FRANK LAMPARD has revealed he produced a secret call to Jose Mourinho over a player Coventry City are considering signing.
The Sky Blues boss turned to his former Chelsea manager for advice earlier this summer as he continues to build his squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Lampard and Mourinho’s relationship has been thrust back into the spotlight following the release of a new three-part documentary concerning the Special One’s career.
And it appears the pair remain in regular contact more than a decade after their time together at Stamford Bridge.

What happened
Lampard revealed he lately messaged Mourinho about a player the Portuguese coach had previously worked with.
The Coventry boss was speaking during an exclusive interview when former England team-mate Darren Bent jokingly suggested he could call in a favour and ask Mourinho to send some unwanted Real Madrid stars to Coventry.
Asked about the prospect of signing the likes of Kylian Mbappe or Rodrygo, Lampard laughed: “Yeah, I’m sure Doug [King – the Coventry owner] would love the wages.
“It would be triple or quadruple our wage bill!

“Jose’s always there. Between us now, I did message him the other day about another player, not a Real Madrid player – but a player that he worked with previously and he’s always on call.

“It takes him a couple of days sometimes. I know he’s a busy man.
“But he came back with a very, highly detailed talk about a certain player we’re talking concerning.”
Why it matters
Although the identity of the player remains under wraps, lampard’s comments suggest Mourinho could yet have a say in Coventry’s transfer business.
Earlier in the summer there were reports that Lampard wanted to bring former Chelsea star Ruben Loftus-Cheek to the Premier League- he’s a player who has worked under Mourinho even though he would have just been coming through the ranks.
But what is clear is that, Lampard and Mourinho have maintained a close bond despite their relationship becoming more complicated over the years.
Mourinho was Lampard’s manager during his hugely successful first spell at Chelsea, with the midfielder becoming one of the most important players in the club’s history.
Background
The former England star said Mourinho informed him he was already the best player in the world, but needed to win trophies to be recognised as such.
Lampard went on to become Chelsea’s all-time record goalscorer and won every major trophy available during his career.
He later admitted Mourinho’s influence on his own managerial career remains significant.
What comes next
Lampard said: “We’ve secured that connection forever now, the Chelsea boys, Jose and that little group that you saw in the documentary, and those sort of bonds do stay forever.”
And while Lampard insists he has developed his own style as a manager, he admitted he has taken plenty from Mourinho.
He said: “I knew I loved Jose from a long time ago, but seeing it all back was great.
“I worked with lots of great managers. Because of the confidence he provided me, he specifically was the one that impacted my career the most, in the moment he came in.
“I think many managers have tried to imitate Jose, to a degree, and I wouldn’t or couldn’t do that as I don’t have his characteristics. I have my own.”
Lampard has now been in management for eight years, having started his coaching career at Derby County in 2018 before returning to Chelsea and afterwards taking charge of Everton and Coventry.
