Trump-Backed Catalina Lauf Loses Florida Primary Race

President Donald Trump’s endorsement was not enough to carry Catalina Lauf to victory on Tuesday night in Florida’s crowded Republican primary for the congressional seat being vacated by Representative Byron Donalds. Jim Schwartzel, a conservative media executive, won the GOP nomination Tuesday in Florida’s 19th Congressional District, defeating Lauf and a field that included former Representatives Madison Cawthorn and Chris Collins. The Associated Press called the race for Schwartzel on Tuesday night at 8:03 p.m. ET. Lauf received Trump’s endorsement late in the primary campaign. Trump promoted her candidacy on Truth Social as he sought to help his preferred candidate succeed Donalds. This person left the safely Republican House seat to pursue the GOP nomination for governor. With both races now set, Florida Republicans will head into the general election seeking to maintain their dominant position in the state while Donalds attempts to move from Congress to the governor’s mansion. Trump has scored several key endorsement wins in the 2026 primary season so far, but he has additionally suffered notable setbacks, including Representative Randy Feenstra’s loss to businessman and farmer Zach Lahn in Iowa’s Republican gubernatorial primary. In a post to X on Tuesday night, the president reacted to incoming primary results, saying, “A lot of great WINS tonight!!! President DJT.” Meanwhile, midterm elections are commonly seen as a measure of public approval for the current president, and the president’s party has traditionally lost seats during them. Republicans currently hold a thin majority in the House, with 218 seats compared to Democrats’ 212. Florida Primary Election Results Donalds won the Republican primary for governor on Tuesday night and will advance to the general against Jolly. U.S. Senator Ashley Moody won her Republican primary and will face Democrat Angie Nixon in November’s Senate race. Representative Cory Mills lost his reelection race on Tuesday night to Ryan Elijah.
