The Erode North district meeting of the Tamil Nadu Rural Development Department Workers’ Union was held here on Sunday (August 16), with union coordinator K. Sakthivel presiding.

Union general secretary P. Krishnasamy explained the demands to be raised at the State conference to be held in Tiruchi. S. Devi was elected president of the Erode North district unit of the union, Bharathi vice-president, K. Sakthivel secretary, Tamilarasi joint secretary and Kalpana treasurer. A 29-member executive committee was also elected. Communist Party of India district secretary S. Mohan Kumar and others spoke at the meeting.

The gathering adopted a resolution demanding that the practice of paying sanitation workers through outsourcing agencies be stopped and that their wages be paid directly by the respective panchayats. It also demanded that the workers be paid wages in accordance with the rates prescribed under the Minimum Wages Act and brought under the Provident Fund (PF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) schemes.
