For context, the Shikaripur bandh call given by Bajrang Dal activists, condemning a recent attack on Hindutva activists, received a good response in the town on Wednesday. Plenty of shopkeepers extended backing to the protest by downing shutters.

Meanwhile, the activists had given the call after a recent incident in which a group of Hindutva activists were allegedly attacked by persons engaged in the theft of cattle from Hartalu village in Hosanagara taluk. The activists had chased the vehicle in which the stolen cattle were allegedly being transported. The accused reportedly attacked the activists, leaving a couple of them injured. The local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) extended backing to the protest.

B.Y. Raghavendra, MP for Shivamogga, participating in the protest march organised on the occasion, alleged that a network of persons was active in parts of Shivamogga district in the illegal transportation of cattle, and that they had attacked the activists when the latter tried to stop such activities. He remarked the police should take stern action against those involved and curb illegal cattle transportation.

Former chairman of the Malnad Area Development Authority K.S. Gurumurthy, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders Rajesh Gowda, Pradeep and others additionally took part in the protest.
