While the update at least resolved the conflicting reports 24 hours earlier regarding whether or not his knee injury warranted an MRI, Marte's on- and off-the-field matters remain far from resolved.

Charisse Espinosa-Dash, Marte's agent, informed Jon Morosi of MLB Network that Marte is "at present managing a personal matter and will be undergoing an MRI on his knee tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 20)."

"Ketel appreciates the unwavering support from fans, teammates, the Diamondbacks organization, and Torey Lovullo during this time, " she remarked. "He remains optimistic about his recovery and looks forward to returning to the field to contribute to the team as soon as possible."

Backing for Marte in Phoenix wavered when the three-time All-Star failed to show up at the ballpark for a game two days ago, and was placed on the restricted list minutes before the first pitch.

Players on the restricted list are unpaid under MLB rules. The next day, conflicting reports placed Marte both in Boston, where the Diamondbacks are playing the Red Sox, and in Phoenix to obtain an MRI on his knee. More news: MLB Owners Create Historic $3.9 Billion Padres Announcement.

Notably, the unusual nature of the situation is compounded by the injury. If Marte is hurt, the Diamondbacks can simply place him on the injured list and allow Marte to accrue pay while he rehabilitates. While the nature of his "personal matter" off the field is unclear, it has apparently taken precedence over the injury.

As resisted to the restricted list (effectively an unpaid suspension), she could have produced that clear in her statements to the media, if Marte's agent felt like her client deserved to be placed on the IL.

Since she did not, the public is still left to wonder why Marte isn't getting paid while he is hurt. One of his former teammates furthered the speculation in an interview with a Phoenix radio station Aug. 18.

"For me this is much deeper than missing a game, " former Diamondbacks pitcher Archie Bradley informed KMVP-FM in Arizona. "We've talked regarding the Marte drama throughout the last couple years. But I know this guy. I know his heart. He doesn't not show up for a game unless something serious is going on, in my opinion." For more MLB news, visit Newsweek Sports.
