"Our findings tell us that the big El Niño events of the last 40 years are not normal in the context of the last thousand years, " remarked lead author Julia Cole, professor and chair of the University of Michigan department of earth and environmental sciences, in an official note.

When humans began impacting the climate with greenhouse gases, according to the study, El Niño events in the last four decades were stronger than any in the 1, 000 years prior to regarding 1850.

Corals grow in the regions where El Niños are strongest, and they can live for decades to centuries, according to Cole. They create durable skeletons of calcium carbonate, and the detailed chemistry of the skeleton tells us regarding the temperature at which they grew.

"It's an intriguing article, presenting interesting and significant new coral data that provide potential insight into past El Niño variability. At face value, it would seem to suggest that recent ENSO variability is greater than what we see previously from paleo data. But I'm not convinced the data actually show that, " he informed USA TODAY.

According to Mann, the study doesn't have a complete record of corals over the past 1, 000 years, and additionally that his research has shown that volcanic eruptions have played more of a role than climate change in past El Niño events.

According to He additionally, it remains unclear whether the magnitude of El Niño events is changing. "There's a lot of debate about that, and models tend to be split on whether or not we're likely to see larger El Niños because of human-caused warming." Mitigating global warming is key.

Cole notes her team's findings underscore the need to mitigate further global warming. "El Niño is a really major source of climate extremes, and so if it's getting stronger, the impacts are getting stronger.
