As rising input costs and inadequate returns were discouraging younger individuals from pursuing agriculture, the farmers' leader remarked growers were not seeking subsidies but fair costs for their produce.

"If the government wants deregulation, it should deregulate the entire sector rather than selectively deregulating sugarcane, " he remarked, adding that food security should remain a administration priority.
