JAGATSINGHPUR: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident in which a group of dalit women were prevented from entering a temple and offering holy water in Jagatsinghpur's Erasama.

Nevertheless, a number of villagers allegedly stood at the entrance of the temple carrying lathis and prevented the women from entering the shrine to perform puja. The women alleged that they were subjected to abusive and casteist remarks and threatened with physical assault if they did not leave the premises.

When the women refused to leave, the villagers reportedly threw their bhog offerings on the floor. During the altercation, one of the accused allegedly attacked one of the women with a knife, causing serious injuries.

Notably, the women subsequently returned without performing the puja and afterwards lodged a complaint with Erasama police against eight persons.

According to Erasama IIC Parthsarthi Beura, police had received the NCSC notice and were taking steps to comply with its directions. "Police have already registered cases against eight persons in connection with the incident. One accused person has been arrested and further investigation is underway, " he remarked.
