According to Jipmer, the 100th procedure was lately performed on a 30-year-old man diagnosed with focal cortical dysplasia and drug-resistant epilepsy. Since its inception in 2015, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Programme at the institute has witnessed remarkable expansion, with approximately 50 epilepsy surgeries being successfully performed over the last two years.

"Epilepsy remains a major public health challenge in India, affecting millions of individuals. While a sizeable proportion of patients can achieve satisfactory seizure control with appropriate anti-seizure medication, a significant subset develops drug-resistant epilepsy, in which seizures continue despite adequate medical treatment. For carefully selected patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, surgical treatment can offer the possibility of substantial and sustained seizure reduction, and in appropriate cases, seizure freedom, " Jipmer remarked.

According to Vir Singh Negi, Director of Jipmer, "Completing 100 epilepsy surgeries is a matter of great pride for the entire Jipmer team. Epilepsy surgery is one of the most complex areas of neurological care and requires meticulous presurgical evaluation, advanced investigations, highly-specialised surgical expertise and close coordination between multiple departments".

For Jipmer, the most significant aspect of this milestone is not simply the number of surgeries performed, but the patients and families whose lives have been positively impacted. Every patient who comes to the institute with drug-resistant epilepsy carries the burden of recurrent seizures and the limitations they impose on education, employment, independence and quality of life, he remarked.

"Our endeavour is to ensure that suitable patients are identified early and provided access to the most appropriate treatment. We want to build further on this foundation and develop Jipmer into an even stronger referral centre for complex epilepsy, " the Director remarked.
