More than 40,000 QR panic buttons have been installed in rickshaws, ride-hailing cabs, and other public transport vehicles across Lahore as authorities step up passenger safety measures.
The initiative, launched on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has produced QR panic buttons mandatory for public transport vehicles to improve emergency response and passenger protection.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said traffic teams are at present installing the panic buttons at 45 locations across the city. While 12 dedicated teams are working specifically with rickshaws, teams have also been deployed in every traffic sector.
The drive is also aimed at bringing public transport services into the legal framework while introducing modern safety and security measures for passengers and drivers.
Alongside the installation campaign, Lahore traffic police have established four new driving license centers following requests from rickshaw unions. The centers will make licensing and related services more accessible to rickshaw drivers.
What happened
Shirazi said authorities are increasingly using technology to improve traffic management and produce public transport safer, more reliable, and more efficient.
He added that modern tracking systems installed in online cabs have improved the monitoring of passengers and drivers and allow authorities and service providers to respond more effectively to emergencies and safety worries.
Traffic authorities have also decided to take action against ride-hailing services that fail to adopt the required safety and security features, ensuring that operators in the city meet basic passenger safety standards.
According to the CTO, technology-based measures are helping improve traffic discipline and public safety across Lahore. He added that the administration remains committed to using modern technology to provide safer and better-quality transport services to citizens.
