Meanwhile, a series of meetings are planned throughout Mississippi by the Department of Education to assist parents of children attending kindergarten through third grade prepare to meet the state's literacy standards.

Parents with children in kindergarten through third grade are encouraged to attend any of the session places regardless of the child's home district, allowing them to be present for the one that best meets their scheduling needs.

During the meetings, families will be given a synopsis of the requirements outlined in the Literacy-Based Promotion Act. The Act, passed in 2013, intends to provide children with the backing and intervention they may need to reach literacy goals as they move toward the fourth grade.

Since families play an essential role in child's development, attendees will be provided with home-based strategies that will ensure their child's literacy skills are solid.
