A statue of Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, has been installed at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, D.C..

The statue was unveiled during a ceremony on Friday, giving the national day event a symbolic and historic touch.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, unveiled the statue in the presence of members of the Pakistani-American community, diplomats and media representatives.

The statue was presented to the embassy by the Houston-based Quaid-i-Azam Foundation and will remain on permanent display at the mission.

What happened

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Sheikh paid tribute to Jinnah’s political struggle and leadership in the creation of Pakistan.

The Independence Day event began with the national flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by the national anthem and recitation from the Holy Quran. Messages from the president, prime minister and deputy prime minister were also read out.

Ambassador Sheikh also highlighted the importance of Pakistan-US relations, saying both countries continue to cooperate in a number of areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, energy, counterterrorism and regional mediation.

During the ceremony, Pakistani-American community leader and cultural ambassador Waqar Ali Khan was also awarded the President’s Medal for Pride of Performance for his long-standing services.
