The Rawalpindi Ring Road has missed its sixth completion deadline, with the project still awaiting inauguration despite August 14 serving as the latest target date.

Workers have completed the main construction along the 38.3-kilometer route from GT Road’s Banth Mor to Thallian Interchange. However, workers still need to complete the toll booths and tolling system before authorities can produce the road operational.

The Project Management Unit will hand over the completed project to the Punjab Ring Road Authority after workers finish the remaining tolling work. Workers have also completed four of the five interchanges at Banth, Chakbeli Khan, Adiala and Chakri.

Work on the Thallian Interchange remains incomplete after authorities gave it broad-based interchange status. Despite the unfinished interchange, authorities have already connected the Ring Road to the motorway.

The project’s total cost has reached Rs. 47 billion, bringing the cost to Rs. 1.22 billion per kilometer. The latest delay has resulted from the incomplete tolling infrastructure.

Once workers finish the toll booths and tolling system, authorities will transfer the project to the Punjab Ring Road Authority and make the Ring Road functional. Meanwhile, authorities have removed the controversial service area established along the Ring Road.
