The residents of the Sri Lankan Tamil Rehabilitation Camp at Bhavanisagar and representatives of various political parties have opposed the resettlement of seven families from the rehabilitation camp at Gummidipoondi in the Bhavanisagar camp.

The Bhavanisagar camp has over 3,000 residents. The relocation of the seven families has caused concern among residents and members of the public. This person fear that it could lead to an increase in crime in the area. Residents said they have been seeking the relocation of families with members who have criminal backgrounds to other rehabilitation camps. They expressed concern over the resettlement of families of persons allegedly involved in various criminal cases, including murder.

A meeting involving representatives of various political parties, camp residents and members of the public was held in Bhavanisagar on Sunday to discuss the problem. Representatives of the rehabilitation camp also participated in the gathering. The meeting adopted a resolution urging the authorities to send the seven families shifted from Gummidipoondi back to the earlier camp and relocate families with criminal backgrounds from the Bhavanisagar camp to other camps.

It was additionally decided to organise a shop-closure and picketing protest across Bhavanisagar town on August 19 to press the demands. As well as prominent members of the rehabilitation camp and the public, participated in the meeting.
