The Rail Coach Restaurant, inaugurated in the district on behalf of the Salem Railway Division on Monday, is expected to generate ₹46.20 lakh in revenue.

Divisional Railway Manager Panna Lal inaugurated the restaurant at Ayothiyapattinam Railway Station, on the outskirts of Salem city in the Salem-Virudhachalam section.

A press release stated that the Rail Coach Restaurant, spread over an area of 1,000 square metres, has been awarded under the non-fare revenue policy to Kerala Food Express Restaurant for a period of five years.

As part of this initiative, an old railway coach has been repurposed as a restaurant. The coach has been renovated by the contractor and equipped to provide dining services to passengers and visitors. This initiative of converting an old railway coach into a functional restaurant is expected to generate a revenue of ₹46.20 lakh to the Salem division during the contractual period. The Rail Coach Restaurant offers customers a unique opportunity to enjoy a dining experience within a railway coach. This initiative is aimed at enhancing passenger amenities, promoting innovative commercial utilisation of railway assets and generating additional non-fare revenue for the division, the release went on.

According to officials, the Salem division has planned similar projects, using old railway coaches, at Erode, Tiruppur, Podanur, Mettupalayam and Udagamandalam railway stations.
