Android phones now include several anti-theft tools designed to protect personal data before a thief gets a chance to access it. Google’s Theft Protection suite can automatically detect suspicious movement, lock a phone when it goes offline, and let owners remotely secure a stolen device.
Phone Snatching Detection
One of the main features is Theft Detection Lock. It uses AI alongside the phone’s motion sensors, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth to recognize movements associated with someone grabbing a device and quickly running, cycling, or driving away.
If Android detects this type of activity while the phone is unlocked, it automatically locks the screen. Google also uses safeguards to reduce false positives, including limiting repeated locks within a short period.
Another option, Offline Device Lock, protects the phone if someone disconnects it from the internet. After an unlocked phone remains offline for a short period, Android automatically locks its screen. The feature can trigger up to twice within 24 hours.
How to Turn On Android Theft Protection
On supported Android phones, users can open Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection to find the available options.
Samsung Galaxy users can typically access the same tools through Settings > Security and privacy > Lost device protection > Theft protection. Samsung provides Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock through this menu.
Support varies by device. While others require Android 15, google says some Theft Protection features require Android 10 or newer. Android Go devices, tablets, and wearables do not support the full feature set. A screen lock is also required.
Lock a Stolen Phone Remotely
Remote Lock provides another fallback if a phone disappears. Once enabled with a verified phone number, users can visit android.com/lock, enter their number, and complete the security challenge to request a lock.
Remote Lock requires an active SIM, a screen lock, Find Hub, and an internet connection. If the stolen phone is offline when the request is made, Google states it will lock automatically once it reconnects.
Users should also enable a robust PIN or password and biometric authentication. Identity Check can add another layer of protection by requiring biometric verification for sensitive changes when the phone is outside trusted locations such as home or work.
