What happened
Meanwhile, the Central administration has sanctioned ₹2, 229 crore for the construction of the third and fourth lines from Gummidipoondi to Gudur. The decision was taken at a Union Cabinet session held in New Delhi on Wednesday.
According to a press release, the quadrupling of the tracks from Gummidipoondi to Gudur was confirmed along with four other railway projects in the country with a total outlay of ₹13, 000-crore.
For context, the Gummidipoondi – Gudur section, at present, has double lines and forms part of both the New Delhi to Chennai and Howrah to Chennai high density network routes, so it has been decided to construct third and fourth lines. The section additionally falls under the Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) and forms part of the planned East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC). It is the country's first coastal corridor.
