YouTube is changing how it counts views across the platform. Starting August 24, a view will register as soon as a video begins playing, even if someone only watches it briefly.

The new system will apply to regular videos, Shorts, and livestreams, giving all three formats the same public view-counting method. YouTube already introduced this approach for Shorts last year.

Even a Brief Watch Will Count

YouTube has never officially disclosed a minimum watch time required for a standard video to register as a view. However, it was widely believed that viewers generally needed to watch around 30 seconds.

That will no longer matter under the new system. From August 24, YouTube says a public view will count from the first frame, with no minimum viewing time.

The change brings YouTube closer to TikTok and Instagram. It also count views when videos commence playing. It could lead to public view counts rising faster, particularly for videos that attract clicks but fail to keep people watching.

YouTube Will Still Track Who Actually Watches

YouTube is not completely abandoning its previous measurement system.

Creators will still see a metric called Engaged views inside YouTube Analytics. This will provide a better indication of how many residents actually continued watching instead of simply starting the video and immediately leaving.

YouTube says the new public view count will not change creator earnings or YouTube Partner Program eligibility. Monetization will continue to rely on engagement-based measurements rather than every view counted from the first frame.

Getting Monetized is Still Becoming Harder

The easier view counting comes shortly after YouTube announced a separate change that will produce it harder for new creators to qualify for full advertising revenue.

Starting February 1, 2027, new creators will need 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 qualified watch hours during the previous 12 months or 20 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days.

Creators already in the YouTube Partner Program will not lose their membership because of the higher entry requirements.

So while YouTube’s publicly displayed view numbers may soon become easier to rise, actually turning those views into money is heading in the opposite direction.
