Exclusive – Rubina Dilaik on Khatron Ke Khiladi 15, staying away from daughters and Abhinav Shukla’s support: ‘Cried over the phone, wondering if I made the wrong decision’
Television actress Rubina Dilaik is currently facing her fears on the stunt-based reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi 15. Returning to the show two years after welcoming her twin daughters, Edhaa and Jeeva, Rubina revealed that her decision to take on the challenge was closely connected to her children and her desire to set an example for them. In an exclusive interview with Times of India TV, the actress opened up about performing stunts, husband Abhinav Shukla’s constant backing and staying away from her twins. (Photo: Instagram)
I was putting more pressure on myself
I don’t think you can perform your best when you are under pressure. The more pressure you take, the harder it becomes to achieve what you want. I have never really allowed pressure to affect me. Of course, I know people have expectations of me, but this time, I had more expectations of myself, especially as I had already done the show before. This time, I was coming back as a mother, so I kept wondering if I would be able to perform well, complete the stunts and give my best. That was the bigger challenge for me. So, rather than feeling pressure from others, I would say I was putting more pressure on myself and expecting more from myself. (Photo: Instagram)
I remember crying while speaking to Abhinav on the phone
The first stunt. I felt maybe I should have given myself another four or five years to rebuild my strength. Getting back to your earlier physical form within two years of giving birth is not easy. I wouldn’t call myself an athlete, but I have always been physically active and strong enough to take on a stunt-based show like this. However, motherhood changes everything. I remember crying while speaking to Abhinav on the phone and telling him that perhaps I had made the wrong decision. (Photo: Instagram)
For me, reaching the finale or winning the trophy is not the biggest achievement
Abhinav reminded me that I was much stronger than I thought. He told me that failure is part of the journey, but if I provided up, I might always regret leaving my children to take up such a difficult show and not completing it. For me, reaching the finale or winning the trophy is not the biggest achievement. What matters is facing my fears and knowing that motherhood has not made me fragile. (Photo: Instagram)
Motherhood has made me stronger
Motherhood has made me stronger. That is something I have discovered throughout my Khatron Ke Khiladi journey. Looking back, that first shock and failure was extremely important for me. I had entered the stunt with a completely different mindset, but things turned out differently. It made me realise that even if I wasn’t at my strongest physically, I had managed to secure through that experience. And if I could survive that, I felt I could face anything. (Photo: Instagram)
I wanted my daughters to watch the show someday
Every stunt I performed, I had my daughters in the back of my mind. I wanted them to watch the show someday and feel, ‘If Mom can do this, so can we.’ I wanted them to see the courage and determination behind it. I’m not saying they should take dangerous risks or jump from helicopters. That’s not the message. What I want them to understand is that if their mother can face her fears and push herself to achieve something, they can also believe in their own abilities. I don’t expect my daughters to follow my exact path. But as parents, we all want our children to have confidence in themselves and understand their own potential. (Photo: Instagram)
I wanted my daughters to see me as a warrior
The best way to teach them that is through our actions. Children learn more by watching than by being told what to do. If we cannot set an example for them, then where will they learn courage and confidence from? We read about great leaders and warriors in history as their lives inspire us. In the same way, if we want our children to be brave, we have to show them what courage looks like in our own lives. That was always in my mind whenever I stepped into a stunt. I kept thinking: if I want my daughters to see me as a warrior, what kind of example do I need to set for them? (Photo: Instagram)
Having a hands-on partner makes a huge difference
Having a partner who takes equal or even more responsibility when it comes to parenting is truly a blessing. Having a hands-on partner makes a huge difference. I feel extremely blessed that I can focus on my career because Abhinav takes care of our daughters while I’m away. I know that this responsibility also comes with its own challenges, and that’s why my 40-day Khatron Ke Khiladi journey was feasible because of him. There were times when I felt completely overwhelmed and would only cry in front of him. (Photo: Instagram)
On staying away from her daughters
I kept wondering if I had made the right decision, how our daughters were doing and whether he was managing everything well. Even while being away and focusing on my work, I wanted to make sure that they were comfortable and doing fine. I also felt that since Abhinav and my family were making so numerous sacrifices to allow me to pursue this opportunity, I had a greater responsibility to give my best. If I performed the stunts half-heartedly or didn’t work sincerely, I would feel that I had let down the effort and time my family had invested in me. (Photo: Instagram)
Abhinav has been the biggest support in making this possible
My daughters were also giving up so much by having their mother away for so numerous days. So, for me, this journey was not just about winning or completing the stunts. It became a responsibility. If I couldn’t give my best after everything Abhinav and my family had done for me, I knew I would never be able to forgive myself. And Abhinav has been the biggest support in making this feasible.
