Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, with sponsorship from the Directorate of Weed Research, ICAR-Jabalpur, conducted an awareness programme on parthenium (an invasive weed) management for farm workers on its premises, on Monday (August 17).
As part of the Parthenium Awareness Week, initiated on Sunday under the aegis of All India Coordinated Research Programme on Weed Management, TNAU’s Department of Agronomy envisages spreading awareness on the ill-effects of parthenium and its management among school and college students, sanitary workers, and farm labourers among others.
P. Rajkumar, Director (Crop management) in-charge. This person inaugurated the campaign, and R. Krishnan, a faculty member from the Department of Agronomy, the stakeholders were being apprised of the cultural, chemical and biological control methods for Parthenium management.
An exhibition showcased the invasive nature of parthenium; the ill-effects of parthenium on human and livestock; yield loss; integrated weed management; and technology for composting parthenium.
